Pumpkin Spice Everything

October 10, 2017

As soon as the first leaf falls off of a tree, you can hear the trample of Ugg boots and see the flash of North Face jackets and leggings rushing towards the nearest coffee shop to buy a pumpkin spice flavored treat. Many shops these days are trying to jump onto the pumpkin spice bandwagon and it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Starbucks alone has pumpkin bread, pumpkin spice frappuccinos, pumpkin spice crème, pumpkin scone, pumpkin spice latte, and a pumpkin spice chai tea latte.

But what exactly is pumpkin spice? Some people will say that pumpkin spice is: 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons ground ginger, 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg, 1½ teaspoons ground allspice, and 1½ ground cloves.

Others will say the pumpkin spice is the essence of fall. There are many stereotypes circling around pumpkin spice such as that only ‘basic’ people drink pumpkin spice.

Starbucks first came out with the Pumpkin Spice Latte in 2003. And was a big hit even then. Starbucks wanted to try and continue the success of seasonal drinks, such as the Peppermint Mocha and Eggnog Latte, through the pumpkin spice latte. They first tried out the new recipe in Vancouver and and Washington D.C. and the drink exceeded all their expectations and continues to do so today. The pumpkin spice latte hasn’t undergone many changes throughout the years which one can appreciate.
