I am attending the University of Akron studying chemical engineering with minors in chemistry and applied mathematics. I am currently working as an intern for Goodyear Tire & Rubber while in college in the research and development department.
I would tell students to take as many honors or advanced placement classes as possible that align with your personal interests. Do not take them if you feel as though you might not pursue a career that utilizes the information you learn. North Allegheny is filled with many smart and talented students, and it tends to become the norm to take honors or AP classes without really knowing why. However, taking these classes in high school will benefit you enormously when you go into college because you already have an introduction to the material or possibly even college credit to account for the course. As a chemical engineer, I can not express enough how grateful I am to have taken AP Chemistry, Honors Organic Chemistry, and AP Calculus in high school.
Students should focus on their time management skills as well. Being an individual who knows how and when to prioritize tasks is a very coveted skill when you are looking for a job later on. I know that picking a major or a career path may seem overwhelming and confusing, but everything always works out in the end!
