The Downfall of the 412

Are the Pittsburgh sports teams doomed or will their troubles end?

Ever since the beginning of Pittsburgh’s sports seasons, we all knew this would be a rough year for our teams. Losing game after game in football and baseball has definitely not been ideal for the wild sports fanatics in our city. With the Penguins as our last hope, our fate may rest in their hands. Is this where our downfall begins?

Let’s face it. The Pirates are awful. Their record for the year was 69-93. That’s only seven games away from losing 100 games. They fired their Manager Clint Hurdle and pitching coach Ray Searage and have yet to sign anyone to replace them. The Pirates President Frank Coonelly resigned and has sold his home in Pittsburgh. Many people suspect that Neal Huntington, their General Manager, will be next to move on from the team. With the Pirate’s season now over, we can turn our focus to our two other (formerly) successful teams.

The Steelers are 2-4, ranked third in the AFC North. It’s two months into the season, and we are already trailing as one of the worst teams in the NFL. Although we are still in the playoff race, it may not feel like it for any Steelers fan. Many have counted the Steelers out after losing Antonio Brown, Ben Roethlisberger, and Le’Veon Bell all in the span of one year. However, with new starting players like Devin Bush, Mason Rudolph, and Minkah Fitzpatrick, we may still have a chance. For now, our season is not looking too good from where we currently stand.

Pittsburgh’s last hope is the Penguins. Sidney Crosby is dealing with injuries almost constantly. Without him, will our team really be the same? Crosby was back for the home opener, however, he might not be 100% for the next few weeks. With other players gone like Phil Kessel and Matt Cullen, the Penguins may not go on to have the best season this year. So far their record is 6-5, and even though that is much better than we can say for the Steelers, or Pirates, resting all our faith on the Penguins may not end up being our best bet, due to the fact that they are in a competitive division.

All in all, Pittsburgh sports aren’t doing too well, and when it comes down to it, our extremely successful past teams from our city may be struck with defeat this year.
