The one thing that is on everyone’s mind as soon as school starts: Homecoming.

On October 6th and 7th the students of NAI celebrated the school’s homecoming weekend. The  festivities included a parade, the homecoming football game, and to wrap it all up, the dance itself.

The homecoming dance is always one of the biggest and most popular events of the school year, and this year is no exception. The class council worked diligently on the dance preparations to make it memorable once again. “Nothing frustrates me more than trying to build a car out of cardboard, but it was worth it in the end!” Skylar Rodgers says about decorating for the dance.

We have been working on homecoming since before the end of the last school year it takes a lot of planning and coordination so we work to get most of it done before school ends. Some of the decoration planning was done in the summer but we had most of the dance planned well before school began this year.

On Friday, October 6th, the homecoming parade kicked off the weekend with exciting floats made by students complete with costumes, candy and students in the homecoming court. The North Allegheny marching band lead the parade blasting their exciting tunes, followed not far behind by the cheerleading squad. Then the rest of the parade rounded around the building with floats to represented some of the major clubs of NA. There was a contest for the floats, in which the Avatar float for Tiger Thon took away the top prize. Students chosen for the homecoming court had their first appearance during the parade while riding on the backs of cars or trucks. There were also food trucks at the parade serving food like Japanese, fries, and barbeque.

Following the parade, the Tigers football team took on Penn Hills for their 2017 homecoming game, and won with the final score of 27-16. It was an exciting game that kept fans on their feet, including the student section, which celebrated with a black-out theme. At halftime, the homecoming court was announced and the first runners up, Leah Colazzi and Jonathan Van Kirk, were announced, followed by the winners of Homecoming Queen and King, Kaitlyn Root and Matthew Dorsey.

To wrap up the weekend, NAI held a homecoming dance on Saturday Night. The theme was the Great Gatsby and the amazing student council had been working on the decorations and plans since the start of school. The students arrived to the dance at 8:30 pm on Saturday dressed up and ready to dance!

Throughout the night the DJ played an array of different music like slow dance songs, pounding bass music, and line dances like the cotton Eye Joe and the Cha Cha Slide. Outside of the gym, tables were set up with, food, water, and surprise- Rita’s Italian Ice! The students of NAI clearly enjoyed the dance a lot.

“I thought homecoming was very fun because I got to see my old friends that I don’t see much, and the music was great!” says Maciana Rothermel, sophomore.

Whether one was in the parade, decorating for the dance, or just enjoying the experience, everyone who went had a memorable time at Hoco 2k17.
