It’s that time of year again! Everyone is excited for the upcoming holidays.

The main thing that comes to mind is Christmas. There’s something for everyone, like receiving and giving gifts, sleeping in while on break, or being around friends and family. Though there is one holiday that is often overlooked way more than the others, and that’s Thanksgiving. 

Sure, everyone knows when Thanksgiving is coming up and almost everyone appreciates the food it brings, but it is almost always overlooked because Christmas is right around the corner.

As soon as Halloween is over and we take down all the decorations, a lot of people don’t think about putting up many, or any Thanksgiving decorations. The main thing people think about is whether it is too early to put up Christmas decorations, or where they should put the abundance of Christmas decorations they have hidden away in their garage.

Even on the day of Thanksgiving, stores have storewide Black Friday sales for gifts for Christmas. Black Friday used to just be the early mornings on the day after Thanksgiving. Eventually stores started it on Thanksgiving instead of the day after so that people will go to their store for Black Friday deals before they go to their competitors. This leaves not much time for people to be able to spend time with their families and appreciate the holiday.

In fact, several local stores will open their doors on Thanksgiving day:

• Target: Open 5 P.M.
• Best Buy: Open 5 P.M.
• Old Navy: Open 3 P.M.
• J.C. Penney: Open 2 P.M.

Thanksgiving is overshadowed by Christmas because the simple fact is, Christmas seems to be more exciting and entertaining than Thanksgiving. Christmas is full of gift giving and receiving gifts that you may love. Thanksgiving almost seems a little boring when you compare it to Christmas. Christmas is all bright, colorful, and exciting, while Thanksgiving is very dull and basic. 

The excitement that Christmas brings overshadows Thanksgiving to the point where it is just like any other holiday. When next to Christmas and compared to Christmas, it just seems so bland and boring. It really is almost like a forgotten holiday.
