Though homework has always been around, with mental health  being more talked about, students are finding that loadfuls of homework can have a strong impact on just that.

Some students feel that the unnecessary loadfuls aren’t helping with anything, but taking up time and increasing stress levels.

After work or sports, many students come home and start their hours of homework. This can cause many to stay up past midnight or even later.

Some students have many different opinions on this topic, as some don’t mind homework and like the extra practice, while others feel as though it’s just unnecessary busy work.

Sophomore Sreekar Kakumani says, “I believe it’s fair because in most cases it can reinforce what students have learned at school. And many students use notes given as homework to study and do better in their classes. Although I will say in some cases it can be unfair with the total workload from each class adding up.”

However, Kakumani’s thoughts on loads of homework differentiates depending on who you are. “In my opinion, it really depends on the student. For some students they like more homework to review what they learned in class.”

Kakumani also mentions how others feel they don’t need homework. As they may feel they already learned their material. “Also, others have extracurricular activities like sports” which they may consider more important than homework.

“I believe homework should be more geared towards review,” Kakumani says. “For example, some teachers may assign homework that doesn’t do anything except force the student to waste time on problems that don’t help the student.”

He also believes homework could be more simple. Such as homework assigned on websites, like Edpuzzles. Kakumani says, “They are more effective and streamlined compared to worksheets with many questions in the students face.”

Kakumani also said about the school system, “I have mixed opinions on the school system. From an education standpoint, I’d say it’s not terrible. Though improvements can always be made. Such as homework and the grading system.”

He also adds his opinion on outdated school systems. “Honestly it depends on the school. In some schools in places like Texas, many schools are brand new, have high budgets, higher security, better trained teachers, etc. But even in smaller schools, education is advancing technologically and socially. So overall, I believe it isn’t outdated, but it is still growing into today’s society.”
