Shuttle Bus Blues

Junior year can be scary or exciting. It all depends on how you look at it.

Walking into class to learn about a challenging then topic to miss homeroom and, sometimes, the beginning of your second-period class while riding on a shuttle bus. This is the daily routine for one sophomore student who is taking a class at NASH, but it may not be all it’s made out to be.

There are a handful of students who go to NASH for classes. This is achieved by taking a test to skip a class due to being exceptional in a subject. Others take a summer course to prepare themselves for this difficult test. The students usually take courses at NASH that are math or science-related and are typically college-level courses (AP). This allows them to finish all the required math or science classes before their senior year allowing them to take extra electives or courses more suited to their interests and passions.

One sophomore said, “Taking a class at NASH that’s suited for your skill level can be really good for your learning and it makes sure that it’s challenging enough for you so you don’t get bored.” A student can take a class for their age but that may not suit their mind. These advanced classes allow students to fully immerse themselves in a subject and make it challenging for them to test their intellect.

According to that student, “The travel time coming to NAI from NASH on the shuttle bus seems to be a problem to many. A con of it is definitely the travel time: for example, I spend homeroom on the bus back to NAI, so I can’t meet up with friends or participate in homeroom activities.”

Students enjoy homeroom time because it is time given to them by the school to do as they wish within what their teacher allows. The transportation on the shuttle bus is done during homeroom time to make sure these students don’t miss parts of their next class, but this also means they miss this valuable period.

“Sometimes my workload from math is drowning me, but if you think you can handle it, go for it,” another student in AP Calculus said. Completing homework or studying for the next math test is not always their first priority; they have responsibilities elsewhere that they cannot ignore.

Other classes at school also have a large workload making it difficult for students to finish it all on time, but if you enjoy studying and learning about that subject, taking these classes is a very valuable way to educate yourself.

NASH classes challenge students and push them to do their best. Students go to and fro NASH every day for advanced classes and enjoy the experience. The difficulties and challenges are easy to overcome and the knowledge gained is worth the loss of homeroom time.
