Despite intense controversy about on-set drama, Don’t Worry Darling is 2022’s best.

Faith Myers, Staff Writer

From romance to horror to adventure, 2022 had many great movies released. If you’re like me and like all genres, 2022 had the best of everything. Here are my top ten movies from 2022:

  1. The Batman

Starring Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz, The Batman is an action film full of mystery and adventure. When patterns of murders scatter across Gotham leaving clues for Batman, he seeks out to find who’s doing these unspeakable crimes. With the help of catwoman, together they help crack these unfolding crimes. This movie is full of twists and turns, and the aesthetic of dark, twisted, and suspenseful makes it hard to look away!

  1. Pearl

Starring Mia Goth, Pearl is about a girl named Pearl who will stop at nothing to be a star(and I really mean anything). In this thriller movie, Pearl desperately wants to leave her family’s farm and be a star on the big screen. She goes on a killing rampage. Some for the fun of it and others so she could ensure that no one could stop her from pursuing her dream. Set in 1918, we follow Pearl and the sadistic acts she does on her journey of wanting to be an actress. The progress of her on her journey to be famous and her fantastic 8 minute monologue towards the end, this movie is one of the best this year!

  1. The Black Phone

Starring Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames, The Black Phone is about a boy named Finney Shaw trying to make it out alive after a kidnapper called “The Grabber’ is on a streak of kidnapping kids and he’s now one of them. Finney’s able to connect to past victims through a disconnected black phone on the wall. Those past kids help Finney on his dramatic journey trying to survive. This movie had me hooked the entire time. In the beginning it started off slow and seemed like the two main characters Finney and Gwen were normal and going to be okay, but then took a turn and slowly got more suspenseful and dark. It was so good!

  1. Purple Hearts

Starring Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine, Purple Hearts is an enemies to lovers movie about an upcoming musician Cassie and a military soldier Luke. They agree to be in a fake marriage to receive military benefits such as health care for Cassie’s diabetes and so Luke can receive extra money. Showing the progress of how they hate but learn to love each other is fantastic. I was not expecting the ending at all when I first watched it. The romance of these two has you on the edge of your seat wondering if they’ll get together.

  1. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Starring Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, and Mads Mikkelsen, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore takes us back into the wizarding world as we follow Newt Scamander and his team on their journey to stop Gellert Grindelwald from taking control of the magical world. This fantasy movie has so many twists and turns, it’s hard not to watch! You don’t necessarily need to have watched the Harry Potter movies or enjoyed them to want to watch this. It’s full of action packed suspense with a little bit of comedy on the side. This is definitely a good movie for any fantasy fans!

  1. Where The Crawdads Sing

Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Where The Crawdads Sing is a fantastic murder mystery. As the main character, Kya’s on her journey to find herself while being drawn to two men, she also struggles with being the prime suspect in a murder. This movie portrays real life situations such as unsolved crimes and prejudiceness, that get you thinking about life more. It is very touching and if you’ve read the novel it’s even better!

  1. Elvis

Starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks, Elvis is a movie following the life of iconic musician Elvis Presley. It focuses a lot on the relationship between Elvis and Colonel Tom Parker and how it slowly ruins Presley’s life. It shows the timeline of his career and how slowly he’s all over the place. How he starts off as a big energetic hit that everyone loves, then to someone everyone hates, then back to love again. It shows the progression of how eventually as Colonel Parker describes “his fans love” is what killed him. Even if you’re not a big fan of Elvis’s music, the movie is so phenomenal that you’ll still enjoy it. Even if you still don’t like it, you can still appreciate Austin Butler’s crazy attractiveness.

  1. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Starring Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, and many others, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is such a great, emotional movie that you absolutely have to watch. The leaders of Wakanda fight to protect their nation from invaders around the world. Although sadly Chadwick Boseman isn’t in the movie, they honor him by having a funeral scene in the beginning. As sad as it is, they still managed to make this movie have great success. Watching the fight scenes and the amazing cinematography, this movie is easily one of the best this year.

  1. Fall

Starring Grace Fulton and Virginia Gardner, Fall had me on edge the whole time. Main characters Becky and Hunter love climbing. When Becky’s boyfriend dies from a climbing accident, she never knows if she’ll ever climb again. Somehow, Hunter convinces her to climb a 2,000 foot radio tower in the middle of nowhere. When the radio tower ladder breaks, they find themselves stranded with no way down. Watching the two of them execute their plan to live is  extremely suspenseful. When I say the plot twist is crazy, I mean it! You won’t want to miss watching this movie.

  1. Don’t Worry Darling

Starring Harry Styles and Florence Pugh, Don’t Worry Darling is my favorite movie of this year. Based on a 1950s set up, Alice and Jack seem to live the perfect life in the perfect community Victory. The women stay home to cook and clean while the men go off to work on a top secret project. The women have one rule and that’s to never talk about or go see what the men do at work. When Alice starts to see problems in her seemingly perfect life, she starts to question why she’s even here. This suspenseful movie is the best this year. It gets you thinking about the world and leaving you to question the mysteries of it. As the movie progresses it gets more psychologically twisted. Out of all the movies I’ve listed, this is the one you most definitely have to see!
