John Mulaney, an American comedian known for his work on Saturday Night Live, and has starred in shows like Big Mouth, Mulaney, Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Oh, Hello on Broadway, surprised fans with a recent recounting of his personal struggles over the last year.

The innocent-looking Mulaney told Seth Myers, on Late Night with Seth Myers, all about his busy year on September 8th, 2021.

Many fans first became aware of Mulaney’s substance abuse struggles through his 2012 Netflix special, John Mulaney: New in Town. In it, Mulaney admits, “I used to drink too much, and then I would black out.” Mulaney tells the audience that he had serious addiction problems all throughout high school and college. 

This revelation surprised audiences because Mulaney appears so sweet and baby-faced; however, Mulaney admits in the special that he had experienced many addiction problems that he seemed to have overcome, but we learn that he hasn’t yet fully recovered, and he would have to wrestle with those demons a bit more.

COVID-induced lockdowns were hard on many people, but it was quite difficult for Mr. Mulaney. He filed for divorce, checked into rehab, checked out of rehab, got divorced, started dating Olivia Munn, and is now having a baby with Munn. 

He talked about his busy year on Late Night with Seth Myers on September 8th, 2021, saying, “Since last September, I went to rehab, I got out in October, I moved out of my home from my ex-wife, I host Saturday Night Live on Halloween, I relapse on drugs after the show, and I am told I took a job here (Late Night with Seth Myers).” 

Mulaney continued, saying, “I continued using drugs, you (Mr. Myers) and some other friends staged an intervention, I went to rehab again for two months, I got out in February, I lived in sober living for a month and a half…”

Although Mulaney has been through a lot, there are some beams of light through the darkness, like his new girlfriend, Olivia Munn. 

“…in the spring I met and started dating a wonderful woman named Olivia (Olivia Munn)… she’s held my hand through that hell, and we’re having a baby!”

Mulaney’s confession was not a big surprise to some fans due to a strange interview on Meyers’ show right after Mulaney had hosted S.N.L. on Halloween in October 2020. He showed up to the interview wearing dark sunglasses and a huge trench coat. 

Since his most recent appearance on Myers’ show, Mulaney appeared to a sold out crow at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, in Long Beach, CA on December 10.

Mulaney is finally recovering from his crazy year. His baby will be born soon, and he is excited about becoming a father. 

Mulaney told Seth Myers that he is grateful for all of his friends who have helped him through the darkness of addiction. He also encouraged people struggling with addiction to seek help, saying it could save them from themselves.
