I scurried down the vent to my family, bringing home my most prized possession, swiss cheese. This was one of my more lucky finds in the cafeteria. It was lying on the table, begging for me to take it home to enjoy and savor. Just another average day with my family.

My eyes were drawn to the cheese in my paws not realizing that I was running directly into a hole in the floor. I swear this hole was not there before. I guess it was karma for clawing at my brother’s face.

My eyes got blinded by a bright light as if I was in heaven. The second I fell, I knew I was in danger. Mouse intuition. I scurried away as fast as I could and burrowed into what looked like a hole. I knew that pretending I was dead was the only way I could stay alive. I did not realize that I was out in the open, privy to everyone but myself.

Large feet were stomping my way and fear was instilled in my heart, so I ran. I thought I was going to be killed. Uncle Raton always told me about how his wife got squished by someone in this very school in cold blood. I ran as fast as I could right into what looked like another little hole, but this one started moving. I smelled food and garbage in this hole I was in, and I had a little snack. I saw flashes of light and was blinded temporarily by what looked like cameras. I had seen lots of large people holding these contraptions before.

I soon felt the cold breeze from the outdoors and was let out into the wild. I could feel the danger in the air. I am not an outdoor mouse and I know surviving out here will be very difficult. I watched as the people walked away and I was left in this vast and lonely land. I wanted to explore with my family, not all alone. I don’t even have my swiss cheese anymore. The vents were my home, my birthplace, and everything was taken away from me because of those petty humans. Those rascals took me away from my home in the vents!
